Small beginnings to missions!
Belated New Year greetings! Coming to the end of January I feel most of my New-Year resolutions are already in the rubbish bin. Not unfamiliar. It happened before, a number of times. I knew it would happen again. By the time I enter the second month of the year, I will hardly remember what those New Year-resolutions are. However today I have asked the Lord to reveal to me where I have gone wrong and how does this relate to the great commission. To my surprise he answered me by saying. “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.” Zechariah 4:10 NLT
I had not valued and appreciated the power of small beginnings.
- Not valuing small beginnings will bring about pressure to perform and therefore lead to impressing others rather than achieving the goal.
- If we do not value small beginnings we stand a great chance of fast tracking things and therefore make hasty decisions.
- Not valuing small beginnings can lead to a path that dishonours God.
The word of the Lord does not only tell us God rejoices to see the work begin but reminds us to not despise starting slow and small.
However, like many, I am a good starter but lack continuity and a sublime ending. Therefore I need God to help me start and I need God to end. As it is written, “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. ” – Philippians 1:6 NIV
In light of the Great Commission, the job is huge and much has been started and God is rejoicing over that, however we need more labourers to help complete the job; labourers who understand the beauty of journey rather than a quick sprint for enticement. Labourers who see the need and help however they can and with whatever skills they have. The Great Commission is not a New Year-resolution to be ticked off but a command to be followed daily as a discipline.
I might have failed in accomplishing my tasks and resolutions for this month but I will not fail at spreading the good news of Jesus to a broken world.
I call you to join me and many others from all walks of life this year in Spain (10-15 July) for a week-long conference followed by outreaches to various parts of Europe and the Mediterranean. We want to see people in Europe and the Mediterranean make small and humble beginnings towards the love of God.
